. >> authorities say the officer shot and killed the suspect out of self-defense. it led to a deadly and unfortunate confrontation. officers responded after his parents called 911. his father reported his son was drinking and acting out of control. >> becker had used a hammer to break the windshield of his father's truck. when police arrived becker did not settle down. when they got to the scene, the approach the subject. he still had a hammer. >> when the officer saw him walking down the street toward them they exited their vehicles and shouted several times to becker to drop the hammer and surrender. becker refused. he continued to approach the officers. >> once he got within arm's length and raised the hammer, the officer feared for his life and charged -- discharged one round, striking him in the upper torso. >> becker was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. we attempted to speak to his family but they were too distraught to make a comment after their phone call took a tragic turn. >> i am pretty sure the reason they made a phone call is if you have a subject with
and 9 defense spending, what you talked about on the show quite a bit. a big chunk comes from tax increases. little the end of the unemployment benefits of that been going on for a while, the payroll tax holiday and the alternative minimum tax which is going to grab more and more people. you will have less subsidies for lower income people who are unemployed today and higher tax on middle income americans. it's not great. none of us want tax increases but at the end of the day trillion dollars deficits are bad, too. trillion dollars deficits every year as far as the eye can see, that's a tax on our kids, our grandchildren, on people who have saved their whole lives and done the responsible things. trillion dollars deficits are a tax, too, and that's what we have to understand. >> it's not good leadership to pass the buck, especially on future generations. they don't deserve to pay for our problems ander responsibility. what do you think is the biggest problem with raising taxes on the wealthy? it's so easy for them to say raise the taxes on the rich, punish them? >> well, the pres

actually being shut down on the defense contracting side and other government services not being paid for. that i can see. much higher taxes soaking up the revenue. so yes, that is a big thing. this is all gamesmanship about going over the cliff. both sides can say they win if they go fo over the cliff, oddly enough. and that is where we are going. shibani: i wants to ask both of you, when are we going to get back to fundamentals? the bottom line for investors, when are we going to get back to fundamentals, what month, what quarter in 2013? >> i think it will be in a couple of weeks here in january. it is earnings season, we will get a picture into what companies are seeing. it is almost irrelevant what happened in the fourth quarter. we want to pay attention to what they're seeing from their customers looking into the future. shibani: what are you looking for in 2013? >> i think we will get there when we figure out this cliff situation and the other half when the fed lays off the pedal because that is the other real peace driving us, driving the market beyond the market fundamentals. dav
to kick in. that's the only way we'll cut defense spending in this country. what is happening with the sequester? where are we on the pentagon cuts? >> nobody wants those pentagon cuts, including the president of the united states. there may be some on the left who would favor that. but that's not a dominant position. that's not where the political center of gravity is in the country. i think it's very likely that those sequester cuts are going to be turned off. now, remember the sequester, $1.2 trillion over the next nine years. that's a little over $100 billion a year. so half of that is defense, half of that is discretionary. the kick the can mini deal solution that we're talking about would identify some subset of spending cuts that would be the lowest hanging fruit still available that might turn off the sequester, or they could just turn off the trigger all together. the sequester exists because of a law passed by congress, another law passed by congress could change it. >> good to see you, john. thanks for the update. >> mastercard spending pulse saying it's the lowest

and his possible nomination as defense secretary. do you think this is a new thing, roland, to shoot down a nomination, when it's just been sort of floated as a trial maroon? >> actually, it's why trial balloons were actually created, to sort of gauge the public, if you will. i still believe president obama should have put ambassador rice's name forward, and he should have dared the united states senate to vote her down. and also, i think, if you look at the administration, they have not done, to be honest, an effective job of really getting the cabinet out in a large way. because you think about the last four years, secretary of education, arne duncan, he had an opportunity to really step out there. secretary of state, hillary clinton, defense secretary bob gates. but you did not have, again, your labor secretary. you didn't have your commerce secretary, your energy secretary. so he relied on sort of the people just around him. i think this administration and the president should do a better job of getting his cabinet out there, because, frankly, most americans don't even know who the re

a personal touch. he had goals like the strategic defense initiative. i was the first one who defended him against a guy named al gore and tom downey. i went after them for about an hour. reagan wrote me a nice personal letter the next day. he was very committed to what he wanted -- mr. gorbachev, tear down this wall. once he made up his mind he was very strong in his position but he was also very amenable to dealing with people where he could. he was not so hard knows that he was not willing to try to find a way to solve problems. he worked with tip o'neill, a very strong democrat, in order to solve the social security problem and i am not sure any other president would be able to achieve what he did. plus the economic growth with his tax cuts. i think he had that real nice, soft personality, a very warm guy who knew what it was to be poor and to fight your way out of difficult things. but he was also a man who had convictions. he was willing to go to the mat if he had to. a good man. the best i knew. >> does the presidential nominating process bring candidate in to this system with convi
